Blackened silver raven necklace, solid silver with diamond eyes, a yellow gold bail and a solid 9ct yellow gold Vegvisir, with hallmarks, hung beneath it.

Ravens represent the largest species of crows and are seen throughout the world in their various guises.  Ravens can be very long-lived, they usually travel in mated pairs and although relationships between ravens are often quarrelsome, they demonstrate considerable devotion to their families.

The ravens’ habitat of rugged cliffs and wild landscapes has seen them promoted as a powerful symbol of mythology and folklore. Ravens feature heavily in Norse legend and work well with the gold Vegvisir attached to the pendant.

This raven pendant is made from solid sterling silver. The silver has been oxidised to represent the raven’s black feathers and genuine diamonds have been set into its eyes. The raven pendant has a wingspan of one and a half inches, that’s a little under 4cm.

The Vegvisir symbol is in fact a magical stave from the book called Huld Manuscript collected in Iceland by Geir Vigfusson in 1860. There's an inscription accompanying the stave that declares that "if this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known".

In today’s world, many of us occasionally feel a little bit lost, so the Vegvisir is still a very relevant amulet.

Vegvisir translates as ‘way shower’ or ‘trail marker’. Many people may also know them as ‘Viking compasses’, which is not entirely accurate - although they do come from Iceland, and Icelanders are descended from Vikings. The Vegvisir measures 1.2cm, which is a fraction under half an inch, in diameter.

The finished piece has been hung from a bright, 18 inch long, antiqued, solid silver chain and is supplied in its own gift box.
