Ichthyosaurs (meaning "fish lizards") were large marine reptiles that thrived in the prehistoric seas between 250 and 90 million years ago. They ranged in size from as small as an otter to as big as a whale and came to resemble modern-day dolphins and marlin through the phenomenon of convergent evolution.

Ichthyosaur fossils were extremely popular among the natural philosophers of the nineteenth century whose research helped give rise to the modern science of palaeontology.
